Construction Water Strategy

A Simple, Phased Approach

Water is used during construction to prepare each new section of the project for operation.

The water is used in phases, and most of it is safely returned.

Built One Section at a Time

The project is built in 48 megawatt sections, with about one new section every six months.

Each section uses about 3.1 million gallons of water during construction to fill, flush, and test the cooling system.

This does not happen all at once.

The water use is spread out as each new section is completed.

How It Works

1. Fill

Water is brought in through a temporary construction hydrant connection.

2. Test

The cooling system is tested and prepared for operation.

3. Flush

The system is flushed as part of the normal startup process.

4. Return

Most of the water is safely returned through the local water system for treatment and returned to the water cycle.

Temporary, Not Continuous

This is temporary construction water used when each new section is brought online.

It is not one large upfront water draw for the entire project.

Because construction happens in phases, the water need is spread out over time.

Ongoing Water Use: Post Construction

Very Little Water Is Needed Once the Project Is Operating

Once the campus is up and running, the cooling system does not use process water.

The cooling system is fully closed loop and air cooled.

That means water is not continuously flowing through the cooling system or being used up to keep the equipment cool.

Typical Daily Water Use

About 9,200 Gallons Per Day

This is the expected average daily water use for the entire campus.

Up to 26,300 Gallons on a Peak Day

This number is a conservative estimate that assumes several different water needs are all at their highest level at the same time.

In reality, those peak uses do not normally happen together.

What Is the Water Used For?

The water that is used supports normal building needs such as:

Restrooms and sinks

Humidification

Landscaping and irrigation

These are the same types of everyday water uses found at many large commercial and industrial facilities.

What Happens to the Water?

About 11,250 gallons per day is expected to return through the local water system for treatment.

Water used for irrigation soaks into the ground or naturally evaporates.

Water used for humidification leaves the building as water vapor.

The cooling system itself does not require a continuous supply of water.

How Does That Compare to a Large Warehouse?

The campus is about 4.1 million square feet, similar in size to a large warehouse or logistics facility.

A warehouse of that size could have roughly 1,850 to 2,050 employees working on site.

At typical employee water use, a facility like that could use approximately:

37,000 to 41,000 Gallons Per Day

By comparison, the data center is expected to use:

9,200 Gallons on an Average Day

Up to 26,300 Gallons on a Peak Day

That means a similarly sized warehouse could use roughly four times as much water on an average day.

What About Cooling System Maintenance?

The cooling system is designed to stay closed once it is filled.

If additional fluid is ever needed, it comes from premixed solution stored on site, not from the community water supply.

The system is also tested periodically using only a very small amount of fluid.
